Style 1: Fruit and Broccoli Christmas Tree

fruit and broccoli christmas tree

This is probably one of the best Christmas broccoli side dish recipes that you can have on your dining table. It is a 3D Christmas tree made out of fruits, vegetables and broccoli. And boy, it sure looks stunning!

In case you don’t know what to put as décor on the dining table, this style is definitely something worth giving a try. It is both beautiful and edible. In fact, you can have few of these on the table and you’re good for a fun filled Christmas dinner!

Ingredients

Here’s what you need for this recipe

  • apple
  • broccoli
  • dragon fruit
  • pomegranate
  • carrot
  • toothpicks
  • strawberries
  • kumquat
  • star fruit

Instructions:

1. Blanch the broccoli for about 8 minutes. Make sure they are cooked as you will be eating them as well. This is an important step as some people would choose to use raw broccoli. But, not everyone like to eat it raw and the color won’t be that attractive too. Cook it carefully as well as you won’t want it to be too soft for the toothpick to support it later.

2. Cut a thick slice of apple for the base. Apple is the best for the foundation of your broccoli Christmas tree. In fact, we haven’t found other types of fruits that would serve the purpose well. You can coat it with some citrus juice to prevent it from turning brownish.

3. Cut off the base of a carrot and fix it to the apple base with toothpicks. Get a thin and long carrot for this. You might have to stab a few toothpicks at its end to fix it firmly onto the apple. Essentially, this carrot will be like a pin cushion for your toothpicks later.

4. Arrange broccolis at the base. The base needs to be big to form the Christmas tree appearance. So, put chunks of broccolis and slowly work the way up. You can use 2/3 of your entire broccolis for this.

5. Put up fruit cuttings on toothpick up to the rest of the tree. Here’s the fun part! It’s time to decorate with the fruits! Get those strawberries, kumquat and dragon fruit up. Don’t forget to mix it with some broccolis too!

6. Star fruit goes on top! Every Christmas tree needs to have a shiny star on top! This is the perfect job for a slice of star fruit.

7. Sprinkle with pomegranate. The tree needs some garnish. You can also use corn bits or a bit of icing sugar to give the snow effect. Use fruits other colors that you don’t have on the tree. Your first style of Christmas broccoli tree is now complete!

Make your own dipping sauce to go with the broccoli xmas tree. 1/2 teaspoon of soy sauce and 1/4 cup of mayonnaise will make a delicious salty and savory dip that goes well with it!

Bonus tips: You can create star-shaped capsicums with cookie cutter for decoration too! Cookie cutter makes it easy but if you don’t have it, cutting it with knife will work too. But, be careful!

Broccoli is great on its own but a home made sauce would make it even better! Mix hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil and chili paste together for a mind-blowing dipping sauce!
