Longest Lasting Food Storage

Fresh foods come with a shorter life span, but it’s also one of the healthiest option out there. It definitely beats canned food. And the food that you cook yourself is always healthier than most outside food. So, to save your money, here’s some tips to extend the freshness of some common food stuffs.

1. Nuts

They absorb smell from the surrounding so it’s better to keep them in an airtight container. They’re also sensitive to heat and moisture, so it’s best to keep them in the fridge. They can last up to 6 months in the fridge so be sure to keep a label of the date in which they’re stored for record purposes. Sometimes they might go stale but it’s okay. You can revive the fresh nut taste by baking them in 350 degrees oven for 10 minutes.

2. Cucumbers

Cucumbers last longer in the cool place of the fridge. They’re sensitive to ethylene gas produced by fruits so be sure to keep them away from fruits.

3. Cheese

Cheese belongs in fridge. You can store cheese in wax paper. Cheese paper is the best though as it allows it to breathe while preventing moisture from coming in contact with it. Alternately, you can also apply a coat of olive oil and keep it in an airtight container before placing it in the fridge. Mold may still grow but it’ll grow on the protective oil coating.

4. Mushroom

Mushroom is best stored in paper bags in the fridge. The paper bag absorbs moisture while allowing it to breathe.

5. Garlics & Onions

Both needs a well ventilated, cold, dry and dark place to last longer. Only bulbs in good condition are good to be stored. Those bruised or sliced needs to be eaten first. Keeping them in kitchen counter is the best place for these foods.

6. Salad

Place paper towel with the salad in the container before putting them in the fridge. The paper towel absorbs moisture and help your salad to remain crisp.

7. Honey

They get crystallized in the fridge. Putting them in a seal-tight container at room temperature is the best. Keep them away from sunlight and put in glass jar. Honey is slightly acidic, so it’s not good to be put in metal jar as it will cause the metal to rust.

8. Red Spices

While other spices are fine to be kept in pantry, red spices like chili powder, red pepper and paprika should be kept in fridge.

9. Potatoes

You can prevent potatoes from sprouting by keeping storing them along with apples. Apples release ethylene gas that prevents the budding process. Hence, your potatoes remain edible for a longer time.

10. Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables should be stored separately. Fruits release ethylene gas which will cause vegetables that are more sensitive to this gas such as spinach or lettuce to yellow quickly.
