How To Get Rid of Toothaches

Imagine you’re having your tropical vacation in the Bahamas. You’re sipping that Sky Juice and feeling secure about your life. All of a sudden, you felt a sharp pain in your jaw. You put the glass of Sky Juice on the bar table while contemplating deeply on the cause.
There’s no mistaken, it’s toothache. The pain throbbing pain comes and goes as you stared at your drink. You realized your vacation is ruined. But, not if you have the knowledge to curb the pain! Keep reading!

Toothache is usually caused by tooth decay. It can get worse whenever one lays down. Pain exacerbates because more blood rushes towards the head – exerting more pressure to the teeth. What’s worse about toothache is that it can come out of the blue. We can be in the middle of a vacation or late at night where getting a dental checkup is impossible if not inconvenient. Today, we will be revealing some home remedies to make toothache go away. Note that this is just a temporary solution. A dental checkup is still the best option to get proper treatment.

Today, we’re gonna go through a list of remedies that you can get to suppress the pain until you get a proper treatment for your teeth.

1. Salt Water

Salt increases the pH balance of the mouth. Higher pH means its getting more alkaline. Bacteria in the mouth thrives in acidic environment. By changing the pH to a more alkaline setting, the bacteria struggles to live. This stops bacterial activity.

  1. Put 1/2 teaspoon of salt on a cup of warm water and stir.
  2. Gargle with it for at least 30 seconds.
  3. Repeat several times a day.

 2. Clove Oil

Clove oil is extracted from clove plant, Syzygium aromaticum. It is commonly used in treating toothache due to its antimicrobial, antifungal, antiseptic and antiviral properties. It can fight infection and kill bacteria. It also has anesthetic properties that helps to numb the nerves and alleviate pain. Clove oil has a strong unpleasant taste and gives a stinging sensation. Hence, it is recommended to use a dab.

  1. Slightly dip a cotton dab into the clove oil.
  2. Rub the cotton dab at the part where the toothaches.
  3. It is common that we may find the aching tooth hard to be reached. In that case, lay on the side where the tooth is aching and let the accumulating saliva wash the clove oil onto it.

Clove oil is edible despite its strong smell and taste. But, it needs to be diluted. Consuming clove oil by dropping 2-3 drops in a cup of warm water can help avoid heartburn. Note that large doses of undiluted clove oil can cause side effects such as sedation, vomiting, kidney damage and liver damage.

3. Garlic

Garlic releases Allicin, when it is cut. It’s a defensive mechanism against fungi and soil pathogens. What is meant to protect the garlic itself turns out to be something very beneficial to us. Allicin has anti-hypertension, anti-cancer and anti-bacterial effects. It is the whole reason why garlic is so famous.

  1. Cut a garlic clove in half.
  2. Put the garlic around the tooth/gum area of the tooth.
  3. Gently rub the area for 10 minutes.
  4. Chew the garlic clove to release more Allicin.
  5. Let the garlic juice soak on the affected area for at least 15 minutes.
  6. Rinse your mouth with salt water to wash the garlic taste away.

4. Turmeric

This spice is very popular in the culinary world. Turmeric is one of the ingredients that make up curry powder. Did you know that it is also used as fabric dye? The active ingredient, curcumin in turmeric has anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant and anti-cancer properties. It also can control diabetes by lowering blood sugar level, regulates cholesterol level and act as painkiller.

  1. Massage the aching teeth with turmeric powder for a few minutes.
  2. Gargle with water to wash it away.
  3. Brush your teeth with toothpaste as turmeric can stain the teeth yellow.

5. Thyme

Thyme is an aromatic plant used in cooking, as well as medical and ornamental purposes. It has been used to treat conditions such as diarrhea, sore throat, stomachache and flatulence. What makes it a suitable item for our toothache treatment is its antiseptic properties. Chewing one of these in your mouth can ease the pain in your mouth. Note that you should chew on the other side where your tooth aches. This is because the small leaves of the thyme may go into the spaces between the aching teeth, inducing more pain.

An alternative option is using its essential oil:

  1. Slightly soak a cotton dab with thyme essential oil.
  2. Rub the cotton dab on the area around the affected tooth.
  3. If the area is hard to reach

6. Wheat Grass

Wheat grass is often used in juicing. One glass of wheat grass juice contains about 70% chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has tons of benefits when ingested! Some of them are remove ingested toxins, slow down aging, prevents graying hair, cures acne and promotes healing. A study also has been done on wheat grass which shows its capability in reducing bacterial activity. This makes it one of the right choices to relieve toothache.

  1. Make a blend of wheat grass juice.
  2. Gargle your mouth with the juice for at least 5 minutes.

7. Baking Soda

Baking soda is another common item that you can usually find in one’s kitchen. It is usually used in baking and tenderize meat. However, it is also useful for many other things such as cleaning, relieve pain and deodorize! Baking soda is alkaline in nature and bacteria can’t live in that condition. This is what governs its effectiveness in stopping toothache.

  1. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda and salt into a glass of half-fulled warm water.
  2. Gargle with the mixture for 5 minutes.
